Frequently Asked Questions*

What do the player fees include?

Player fees include uniform (typically a "T" type jersey and cap), team registration with USSSA and/or Nations Baseball, team insurance (not individual medical coverage), tournament entry and registration fees, coaching fees, team equipment (players are responsible for their individual equipment), coaches travel expenses for out-of-town tournaments, clinic costs, and clinic coaching fees.

What types of items are not included in the player fees?

These fees do not include travel expenses, food and drinks, medical insurance, private coaching lessons, costs associated with special circumstances (emergency and independent travel etc.), and miscellaneous expenses of any kind.

What should I bring?

Players should bring all their normal playing gear (cleats, sneakers for cage, bat, glove, batting helmet, complete baseball attire, water), and an energetic, positive, attitude and work ethic.

What are the uniform colors?

The Texans provide a shirt and cap, everything else is provided by the player.  Our colors are royal blue and white.  We wear either a royal blue (with white lettering), or white (with royal blue lettering) jersey depending on the season.  Players are generally issued one jersey per season.  Players can wear white (preferred) or grey pants, dark colored socks and belt, dark colored or white cleats.  You should not need to purchase uniform equipment specifically for play with the Texans, standard issue, which can also be used with the other teams you play for, should do.  Please contact us before making any special purposes.

What is the expected roster size (number of players)?

While the cost of the program is ultimately determined based on the estimated number of tournaments and players on each team, the numbers of players on each team roster is more directly determined by the projected availability of players throughout the season.  Our preferred team construction for weekend 4 to 6 game tournaments is approximately 14 position players plus 4 to 5 pitchers (only).  We feel this often provides enough players to provide competitive pitching, share the catching duties (2 to 3 catchers), allow for injuries, rotate 3 or more position players (one IF, one OF, one utility), provide for relief pitching, and enable players to spend sometime on the bench listening to the coaches and analyzing the game (which we feel is an important part of experience with MLB quality coaches).

Senior teams (18U) frequently require more players than this for the summer season as players are frequently making college visits, participating in college tryouts and camps, attending college orientation sessions, and not available in the latter part of the season as they prepare for college.

Correcting further for the fact that players with experience at the right position must also be available for each game, it should be understandable that moving players between teams provides benefits for both players and the overall program.

Should I make travel and hotel arrangements for out of town tournaments?

Yes, make them early and cancel or adjust the dates with the hotel if necessary.  This can usually be done at no cost. for any changes.

Players and their families should make their own travel arrangements and hotel accommodations for all out of town trips. Our experience is that the number of actual arrangements (staying with friends and relatives, using hotel points, sleeping in the camper, coming and going at various times, etc.) is about equal to the number of players and that it is not worth the time and effort for the Texans to make these arrangements as a team.  Players should plan on meeting at the field 1 hour before game time (or at the time specified by the Coach) just as they would for a local tournament.

Can I keep "stats" (scorebook, statistics) at the games?

Yes, provided they are for your own private purposes only and you do not distribute them.  The Texans are a player developmental program and we intentionally push players to perform based on accomplishing specific individual skills rather than achieving other outside measures of performance.  Focus on standard measures of performance (e.g. batting average, ERA, etc.) discourages players from utilizing new techniques or moving "outside their comfort zone".  In addition, we generally do not play enough games to make statistics meaningful within a weekend or even season.  The Coaches have no difficulty evaluating performance based on their own visual assessment of the play on the field.

Further, it is our experience that parents who record and distribute statistics often are attempting to justify their own evaluation of coaching decisions, and this is divisive to the team.
