Fielding Work With Former Astro Eric Yelding Sept. 7 to 14 (rev. 9/4/2006 8:50am)

Fort Bend Texans Clinic Coach and Former Houston Astro Eric Yelding will be in town this week (Sept. 7 to 14) to work with young players on their fielding, base running, and throwing.  Coach is an outstanding instructor in these important parts of the game.  Coach Yelding was known during his playing days for his outstanding base running (he once stole 64 bases in an MLB season), great hands, and great fielding.  Outstanding fielding is a way to earn your way onto the field as you progress thru baseball, and individual instruction in fielding is probably the most neglected part of player development.  Coach Yelding learned from the best and knows how to teach the game also.  He is available for private lessons this coming week and next by calling Coach Carter at 832-444-2307.

Congratulations on a Great Summer 2006 Season (rev. 7/24/2006 8:00am)

With 2 of our 3 active teams this past weekend playing their way into Sunday playoffs, and all 3 teams playing well against strong competition, the Texans put a positive wrap on the Summer 2006 season.  Our players as a group showed the type of progress in their skills, techniques, and approach that our program uses as our measuring stick of progress.  Congratulations from the Coaching Staff on your great effort and dedication.  As your cumulative availabilities show, now is the time to assess your progress, take some well deserved vacation, and rest your body.  We will be mailing written player evaluations for the summer 2006 season in approximately 2 weeks.  These evaluations are based on notes taken by the coaching staff during the season, and input from all of the coaches.  Players are also encouraged to directly discuss their summer 2006 season and a recommended plan for further development by scheduling time with Coach Carter.  Once again congratulations and enjoy the next couple of weeks of R&R.

Kyle Winkler Invited to USA Baseball Trials (rev. 7/22/2006 9:30am)

Following an outstanding appearance at the USA Baseball Junior Olympic Tournament in Jupiter, Florida in which he struck out more than 25 batters in 2 games, and led the Texans to a victory over the No. 1 seeded team in the tournament, Fort Bend Texan and Kempner High School Pitcher Kyle Winkler has been named as a candidate for USA Baseball's Youth National Team.  The Youth National team is operated by USA Baseball, and fields the teams which represent the United States in International Competitions and Olympic Tournaments.  Winkler is one of 36 candidates selected by USA Baseball Scouts from top baseball programs across the country.  By participating in the trails Kyle will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to compete for a spot on the final 18 man team roster which will represent the USA in the upcoming Confederation of Pan American Baseball (COPABE) Youth Championships in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

Texans Junior Olympic Team (16U) Makes Sweet 16 (rev. 7/3/2006 9:00pm)

In an outstanding inaugural appearance at USA Baseball's Junior Olympic Tournament in Jupiter, Florida, the Texans gritted their way through a tough 8 game schedule to finish the tournament in the Sweet 16 (out of 72 teams from across the country).  The Texans performance was highlighted by a victory over No. 1 ranked Dynasty Elite Mudcats of Miami, Florida, and several outstanding individual performances by various members of the team.  The success over the long tournament schedule was the result of a complete team effort, including solid starts by all 14 of the rostered position players and strong situational pitching performances by the complete Pitching staff.

Summer Schedule Updates for All Teams (rev. 7/10/2006 3:30pm)

With all of the rain causing cancellations of several recent area tournaments, our schedule has been updated (for all teams) to include more tournaments and games.  Please review these changes on the individual team pages.  With the summer season, several players and their families will be taking vacations and have other commitments; please keep us up-to-date with your availability for each weekend into early August (even if we do not have a game scheduled for a particular weekend now, we may schedule one).  Also, expect to see players moved between teams as we near the end of the season.  This is necessary to keep all positions covered and maximize playing opportunities for all players.  Many of the 16U have also earned the opportunity to further their development by playing some innings at the 18U level.

Former Astro Eric Yelding Visiting This Week (rev. 6/5/2006 6:30pm)

Former Houston Astro great Eric Yelding will be in town this week to work with young players and help with our clinics this weekend.  He was the 19th player taken in the 1984 MLB player draft. He is available for private lessons by calling Hudek's Baseball Academy at 281-565-4660.  See more about Eric Yelding at Baseball Almanac.

Another Great Weekend of Baseball (rev. 6/5/2006 3:30pm)

Congratulations to the 18U-Blue/White teams and the 16U-Blue team on another great weekend of baseball.  While it is always great to win and play the extra games on Sunday, the coaching staff measures the progress in other more important dimensions.  Several players have already done some things (make a play, hit a particular pitch, discuss with a coach, see a play made correctly, throw a particular pitch) that they have not had the opportunity to do before.  Others are closer to understanding what they need to do to make progress (hitting skills, pitching technique, fielding technique, build self-confidence, improve consistency).

Players, here are 3 important questions to ask yourself:

1)  Are you learning anything when you are not directly involved in the play or at-bat?  Since baseball is a game played 3 seconds at a time once every 30 seconds or so, and your participation is 1/9th of the time at best, you are missing a large part of the game if you are not watching and processing.

2)  Have you taken responsibility for your own game?  Talk to the coaches yourself (at the right time and in the right way).  This is your endeavor, you're a young man, and you are the most knowledgeable baseball person in your family.  Take care of your business.

3)  What is your plan?  Nothing is achieved without a plan and "I want to ..." doesn't mean anything without "First I need to ...".
