On the weekend of May 16, the Fort Bend Texans welcomed eight baseball players from inner city schools in Natchez and Greenville, Mississippi who have been selected as the 2015 recipients of the 2nd Annual Velma Carter Scholarship Award for Houston Spring Showcase.
We are proud to provide an opportunity for these talented young men to travel to Houston and work with our Fort Bend Texans players and coaches, and to showcase their talents in front of local scouts. Thank you to our Mississippi sponsors (Rev. Willie Smith and retired Air Force Master Sergeant and ROTC instructor Steve Hinton) and all of our local donors who have made this wonderful outreach program possible. We would also like to thank Paul Hicks, Search Ministries Houston, who joined us on Sunday morning to deliver a message of encouragement.
The Fort Bend Texans believe in Giving God the Glory, and building men of character through baseball. We could not do it without your faithful and continued support!

The Texas baseball team’s return to the Hoy tournament had a “Hollywood” feel to it with Austin in the starring role. Austin hit a three-run homerun in the final inning of the semifinals to break a tie and defeat Indiana. In the championship game against Model, Austin dominated in six innings with 17 strikeouts and allowing one hit. In the final inning, Austin delivered once again making a tag at home for the final out in the game as a catcher. Austin’s heroics at the Hoy tournament earned him a much-deserved MVP award. Austin ended the season with a 4-1 record as a pitcher with 53 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.62. He also led the team with a .636 batting average and four homeruns.
“Austin is a “one of a kind” baseball player. Despite his amazing statistics, he is not only just a great ball player but also a true leader of his team by providing positive support and feedback to his teammates. It’s a thrill to know that he is currently a junior. It will be fun to watch him play again next year.” – Texas Athletic Director Chris Hamilton
